happy kiln

Anagama wood kiln…

This is my primary kiln. It is over 20ft and is an anagama style wood kiln that is traditionally a Japanese design. My original kiln was built in 2015 that my good friend Justin Lambert helped me design. The second version of the kiln now sits at Happy Price’s property, which we first fired in fall of 2021. There is a back chamber for mostly glazed pots we load in tandem with the main chamber. We take 3 days to load the kiln and roughly 5 days to fire it. Over the course of the firing we will go through 6 to 7 cords of a wood consisting of pine, cottonwood, and elm. I have a crew of 10-15 people per firing that help fill and fire the kiln. A lot of work goes into this kiln, which is why it is only fired around two times a year. The process yields results that are slightly different from the last and each pot is unique to itself. Take a look at my woodfire archive to see some the varying surfaces!

Soda Kiln

Soda kiln…

This kiln was built in summer of ’22. It is a 25 cu/ft gas fired soda kiln altered from Justin Lamberts hybrid gas/wood/soda kiln. Soda is introduced in 2-3lbs increments per firing which is a means of glazing the work.
